Conservation of forest ecosystems: the role of unburned patches

WWF Hellas – Τhe future of our forests, (2009-2010)

Forest megafires occurred in Peloponnese in 2007 were recognized as catastrophic not only for Greece but at European level, as they consumed 180000 hectares of land. Fire burned large areas of heterogeneous landscapes, leaving relatively intact a network of unburned patches. The aim of the current research is to investigate a preliminary assessment of the role of these patches in preserving the biodiversity of the main mountainous forest ecosystems burned.
